Bhatkal: Key civic and social issues affecting the town came under discussion during an Eid Harmony Meet organised by local social organlisation Majlis-e-Islah wa Tanzeem at Amina Palace on Tuesday night, bringing together officials, public representatives, and community leaders.
The meeting served as a platform for dialogue between the administration and citizens, focusing on urban infrastructure challenges and the need for social discipline.
Presiding over the programme, Tanzeem President Inayatullah Shabandri raised concerns over persistent civic issues, including delays in National Highway works and the lack of proper drainage systems in areas such as Ranginkatte and other places. He warned that inadequate drainage could lead to waterlogging during the monsoon. He also highlighted delays in the 110 kV power substation project and urged HESCOM to address frequent power disruptions, especially during festival periods.

HESCOM Chairman Syed Azeempeer Qadri, in his address, emphasised the importance of combining religious values with modern education, urging the Muslim community to actively participate in the mainstream. He stressed the need to function within the framework of the Constitution and called upon youth to channel their energy towards nation-building.
Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner K. Lakshmi Priya stated that instructions have already been issued to complete drainage works before the onset of the monsoon. Expressing concern over reported cases of measles in the town, she appealed to the public to ensure vaccination to prevent the spread of the disease.
Superintendent of Police M.N. Deepan highlighted the importance of road safety, making a strong case for compulsory helmet use to prevent accidents. He also spoke about the rising concern of drug abuse among youth and outlined the police department’s ‘Sanmitra’ counselling initiative aimed at addressing the issue.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dilish Sasi underscored the importance of community participation in ensuring that government schemes reach beneficiaries. He called upon organisations to help dispel misconceptions related to health and education initiatives.
Forest Department officials, Congress leader Rama Moger, and Indian Navayath Forum (INF) President Aftab Kola also addressed the gathering.
Among those present were retired High Court judge Ravi Naik, Municipal Commissioner Babasaheb Mane, Tahsildar Nagendra Kolashetti, along with officials from various departments and prominent members of different communities.
Minister’s Absence Draws Sharp Reaction:
The absence of Uttara Kannada district incharge Minister who is also a MLA of Bhatkal, Mankal S. Vaidya from the event, despite being expected as the chief guest, triggered strong resentment among local Muslim leaders.
Organisers expressed disappointment, noting that the programme date had reportedly been fixed keeping the minister’s convenience in mind. “The absence of elected representatives from such important social gatherings is disappointing not just for our organisation but for the community as well,” said the Tanzeem president.
Some community leaders pointed out that while active participation and public greetings are often seen during festivals of other communities, a similar response during major Muslim festivals appeared lacking.
The incident has sparked discussions in local political circles, with observers noting that such sentiments could have implications in the days ahead.
