Karwar: Residents of Tarangamet village near Harawada in Ankola taluk on Thursday urged MLA Satish Sail and Deputy Commissioner K. Lakshmi Priya to ensure that the ongoing coastal erosion protection work is completed before the onset of the monsoon.
The villagers, who gathered at the Deputy Commissioner’s office premises, alleged that the anti-sea erosion work undertaken in the village remains incomplete. They pointed out that soil-filling work between the seawall and the shoreline has not yet been carried out, raising fears of further damage during the rainy season.
Explaining the seriousness of the situation, the residents said that nearly 500 metres of the coastline had been damaged due to severe sea erosion during the 2024 monsoon. Hundreds of coconut trees were reportedly washed away by the sea, while more than 30 houses suffered damage.
The affected families continue to live under the fear of losing their homes, the villagers said, adding that only around 180 metres of seawall has been constructed so far and alleging that even the completed work was not carried out properly.
