Dehradun: Approximately 80 individuals were left homeless following a significant landslide that struck their village within the district, resulting in damage to 12 houses, as reported by the Uttarakhand State Emergency Operation Centre on Friday.
The landslide, which occurred on Wednesday, also disrupted the power supply to Madarsu Majra Jakhan, a village situated in the Vikasnagar area of Dehradun district, roughly 50 km away from the city.
The impact of the landslide affected 16 families, totaling 80 people. Among the houses damaged, 10 were completely destroyed, while two sustained partial damage, according to the center.
Vikasnagar Sub Divisional Magistrate Vinod Kumar, who conducted a visit to the affected village on Thursday, affirmed that even the partially damaged houses are unfit for habitation due to safety concerns.
To address the immediate needs of those affected, temporary relief arrangements have been established at several locations, including a junior high school in Pasta, a community center, and a government inter college building in Langha, where displaced individuals have been relocated. Some individuals have also found shelter with their relatives.
The landslide incident was characterized by the downward movement of the entire hill slope on which the village is situated, Kumar explained.
To provide ongoing assistance, an SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) team has been stationed in the village, with sufficient food supplies made available at the temporary shelters for the affected residents, Kumar confirmed.
District Magistrate Sonika, who conducted an on-site assessment of the situation during her visit to Jakhan on Thursday, indicated that a team of geologists would be dispatched to the village to conduct a thorough geological survey.
She emphasized that officials have been instructed to ensure the well-being of the affected population and to minimize any inconveniences they might face as a result of the landslide incident.
