Mangaluru: To check artificial flooding in Mangaluru during monsoon, the state government has released Rs 35 crore to take up works to strengthen ‘Rajakaluve’ (stormwater drain), MLA D Vedavyas Kamath said on Tuesday.
The planning has been completed and the work on project will begin within two months. Artificial flooding has become common during monsoon in the city. Moderate showers led to flooding of Kudroli, K S Rao Road, Chandrika Layout, Pandeshwar and surrounding areas.
“To stop artificial flooding in Mangaluru City Corporation limits, we require Rs 200 crore,” Kamath said at meet-the-press organised by DK Working Journalists’ Association at Patrika Bhavan in the city.
“In the first phase, works worth Rs 35 crore will be taken up to channelise the flow of water and to check overflowing of water in Rajakaluve. Retaining wall will be constructed to ensure that flooding is checked,” he explained.
The MLA said that foundation stone will be laid soon for a sports complex with a mini swimming pool in Urwa. The proposals have been drafted for water front project in river front area in the city. The discussions are being held with private players to join hands with Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL), he added.
ADB funds are being utilised for underground drainage (UGD) works in Mangaluru and works worth Rs 45 crore are being implemented in Jeppu, Kamath said.
Karnataka Slum Development Corporation has sanctioned 500 houses for the poor in Kannur. As there is connectivity issue to the land, it was decided to look for alternative plots. There is a lack of government land for development works in the city, he said
“If anyone wishes to hand over land for development works in the city, then Transferable Development Rights will be issued to them,” the MLA added.
As a large number of labourers from other districts of state are working in various sectors and the city requires facilities to provide them accommodation at low rent, the labour minister promised to sanction labour sheds, he said. “We have identified two to three sites and submitted a proposal,” Kamath said.
He said another proposal on setting up a mini film city in Kudru was also submitted to government.
To a query on relaxation of guidelines for daily commuters from Kerala, the MLA promised to discuss the issue with district administration.
TDR Cell
A Transferable Development Rights (TDR) Cell to hasten the process of getting land for various development projects and to issue such rights to those who have surrendered their land for projects, will start functioning soon, Kamath said.
There was delay in getting land for projects as there was delay in issuing the TDR certificates to those who had surrendered their land for road widening, drainage and other projects. A retired Shirasthedar and a surveyor had been appointed, he added.
