Karwar: More than eight tonnes of trash was strewn across Ravindranath Tagore beach in Karwar on Saturday.

As the trash was cleared, another load of trash was seen scattered on beach in afternoon and evening. The cleaning was not yet finished till evening as the fresh trash reached the beach.

It was surprising for people as well as district administration to witness such a huge quantity of trash on beach side on a single day.

It’s quite common that trash strew on beaches during monsoon, but Saturday was little different.

In the trash, weeds, fishing net, polythene bags, liquor bottles, plastic waste, clothes, shoes were the main objects and it was showing how sea has been polluted off Karwar coast.

According to experts, after good rain, garbage including biodegradable and plastic waste gushes to streams and river.

The Kali River that flows through in Uttara Kannada district has carried garbage before joining Arabian Sea off Karwar.

Since Saturday morning onwards, beach cleaning machine and ten people were employed.

Till afternoon about 5,000 kg waste was cleaned, but again in late afternoon another huge quantity of waste strew on beach. However till evening about 8,000 kg trash was cleared.

Deputy Commissioner S S Nakul visited the beach in the evening to inspect cleaning work. Later he told Express, they have deployed manpower and beach cleaning machine to clean the beach.

Till evening about eight tractor loads trash was cleaned and still waste is being strew in beach.
