Udupi:  General public should adhere to road safety rules. Accidents can be avoided by adhering to the traffic rules, said Deputy Commissioner Kurma Rao.

Speaking at a meeting of the district road safety committee, he said wearing seat belt and helmet while driving keeps one safe from accidents. The Regional Transport Officer, the Police and the State Highway department officials will ensure that all of the 32 black spots on the highways that pass through the district are addressed. Necessary signboards and warning boards should be installed on the highway.

Awareness on road safety rules will be created among high school and pre-university students by the Police and the Transport departments, to educate students about road safety and traffic rules.

He said all departments implementing road construction projects should ensure that all facilities required for smooth and safe travel should be in place during road construction.

SP Vishnuvardhan said despite the fact that works on national highway are completed, many accidents occur due to failure to clear construction materials on the road.

Speaking at the meeting, social activist Sudhir Kanchan Shriyara said the government should operate KSRTC buses to rural areas.

Shashidhar from the Karnataka Regional Farmers’ Union said KSRTC bus service on the Manipal-Mangaluru route be resumed.
