Puttur: An 18-month-year old kid choked to death here at a house in Chikkamagaluru on 12th February, Monday after swallowing a beaten rice grain.
The deceased was Dhruv s/o Durgaprasab, a native of Swarga Soorambail here. His grandfather Vidwan Padmanabha Acharya trains interested persons in playing violin here since the last two decades.
According to the sources, Dhruva was at his grandparent’s residence in Chikkamagaluru. While having breakfast, a grain of beaten rice got stuck in his throat as a result of which he started choking. He was immediately rushed to the hospital but the doctors were unable to save his life.
Dhuruva left behind his parents, grandparents and his elder brother.
Note to readers: If you encounter any such situation where a person is choking, call an ambulance and immediately start giving him 'abdominal thrusts' instead of just waiting.
To perform abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) on someone:
- Stand behind the person. Place one foot slightly in front of the other for balance. Wrap your arms around the waist. Tip the person forward slightly. If a child is choking, kneel down behind the child.
- Make a fist with one hand. Position it slightly above the person's navel.
- Grasp the fist with the other hand. Press hard into the abdomen with a quick, upward thrust — as if trying to lift the person up.
- Perform between six and 10 abdominal thrusts until the blockage is dislodged.
