Bhatkal: A drunken history-sheeter allegedly created a ruckus for nearly 90 minutes in Haliyal town of Uttara Kannada district on Sunday night, triggering criticism of the police response after videos surfaced showing the man confronting and harassing police personnel in public.
The incident occurred near Maurya Hotel, where the accused, identified as Manja, was reportedly found creating a disturbance after consuming alcohol. Police personnel who arrived at the spot following complaints were allegedly pushed, threatened and chased by the rowdy in full public view.
Videos of the incident, which have since gone viral on social media, show the accused verbally abusing officers, pulling at the door of a police vehicle and even lying in front of it to prevent it from moving. The episode unfolded before a large crowd, raising questions about the police's ability to control the situation.
The prolonged disturbance has drawn public criticism, particularly as the police station is located only a short distance from the scene. Sources said the accused had previously been externed from the district.
Responding to the controversy, Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police Deepan M.N. said a case has been registered against the accused and instructions have been issued for his immediate arrest. He added that the video footage is being examined and an internal inquiry has been ordered into the conduct and response of the police personnel present at the scene. Appropriate departmental action will be taken if any lapses are established, he said.
