New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) extended an alliance offer to the Congress in Delhi on Tuesday, shortly after declaring its intent to contest all 13 seats in Punjab. However, the offer came with a pointed remark as Arvind Kejriwal's party asserted that the Congress did not merit a single seat in the national capital.

AAP MP Sandeep Pathak conveyed that the party proposed the Congress contest only one of the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi. The remaining six seats, according to the offer, would be contested by AAP.

"While the Congress party does not meet the merit criteria for any seats in Delhi, we are extending the offer of one seat to them out of the 'dharma of alliance.' We suggest the Congress party contest on one seat, and AAP on the remaining six," he stated.

In the 2019 general elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a clean sweep, clinching victory in all seven seats. The Congress emerged as the runner-up with over 22 percent of the votes, while AAP trailed in third place.

However, AAP has since demonstrated significant electoral success in Delhi and Punjab. The party emerged victorious over both the BJP and Congress in the Delhi Assembly elections and municipal polls. Additionally, it toppled the Congress government in Punjab.

AAP and the Congress are allies in the INDIA bloc and have been engaged in discussions regarding seat-sharing agreements in Punjab and Delhi. Nevertheless, their state units have displayed hesitancy in finalizing an alliance.

Last week, Arvind Kejriwal announced AAP's decision to contest all 13 seats in Punjab and one in Chandigarh, effectively ending the alliance prospects in the state.

"Two years ago, you blessed us by giving us 92 out of 117 seats in the Assembly elections, creating history in Punjab. Today, I come to you with folded hands, seeking one more blessing. The Lok Sabha elections are just two months away. Punjab has 13 seats, plus one from Chandigarh, totaling 14 seats. In the next 10-15 days, AAP will announce its candidates for all 14 seats. We urge you to ensure AAP's victory across all these seats with a majority," Kejriwal expressed at an event on Saturday.

This announcement followed the joint, albeit unsuccessful, participation of the two parties in the Chandigarh mayoral elections a few weeks earlier.
