Bhatkal: In the Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha constituency, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to register victory for the seventh time, although this time the BJP did not field its firebrand candidate Anantkumar Hegde.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP fielded Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, former Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and a former Minister, for the Uttara Kannada constituency. The Congress fielded Dr. Anjali Nimbalkar, former MLA of Khanapur in the Belgaum district. Kageri defeated Dr. Anjali Nimbalkar by 3,37,919 votes, securing a seat in the Lok Sabha for the first time, despite losing the previous year's Assembly election from the Sirsi segment.

Anantkumar Hegde, the incumbent Member of Parliament who won from the constituency six times, remained neutral without campaigning for Mr. Kageri. However, this did not impact Mr. Kageri's victory.

Dr. Anjali Nimbalkar received the highest votes in Bhatkal, with 67,885 votes, followed by Yellapur with 64,066 votes, Sirsi with 60,124 votes, Kittur with 56,203 votes, Haliyal with 54,546 votes, Khanapur with 48,148 votes, Karwar with 47,889 votes, and Kumta with 44,435 votes, totaling 4,43,494 votes.

BJP candidate Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri received the highest votes in Karwar with 1,13,317 votes, followed by Khanapur with 1,07,978 votes, Bhatkal with 1,00,228 votes, Sirsi with 1,00,052 votes, Kumta with 97,928 votes, Kittur with 92,445 votes, Haliyal with 83,426 votes, and Yellapur with 82,453 votes, totaling 7,81,413 votes. Overall, Kageri remained ahead in all constituencies and registered an impressive victory with more than three lakh votes.

It may be recalled that the BJP has won the Uttara Kannada seat for the seventh consecutive time since the 1996 polls, except in the 1999 election, which was won by Margaret Alva of the Congress.
