Clean Sweep: BJP Secures All 5 Seats in Udupi District

Udupi: In a repeat of the 2018 elections, the BJP swept all five Legislative Assembly constituencies in Udupi district, sending shock waves to the Congress. BJP's gamble in fielding new faces in four constituencies paid huge dividends in the district.

Minister Sunil Kumar managed to secure victory with a wafer-thin margin of 4,602 votes against Congress candidate Uday Shetty Muniyalu in Karkala. Sunil Kumar polled 77,028 votes, while the Congress candidate polled 72,426 votes. In the 2018 election, Sunil Kumar had won by a margin of 42,566 votes against Congress candidate late Gopal Bhandari. Independent candidate Mutalik could secure only 4,508 votes.

In Byndoor, BJP candidate Gururaj Gantiholi polled a total of 98,628 votes, while seasoned Congress leader Gopal Poojary secured 82,475 votes.

Gurme Suresh Shetty of BJP won in Kaup by a margin of 13,004 votes against Congress veteran Vinay Kumar Sorake. Gurme Suresh Shetty secured 80,559 votes, while Vinay Kumar Sorake received 67,555 votes. In fact, BJP's Kiran Kodgi won with a huge margin of 41,556 votes against Congress candidate Dinesh Hegde Molahalli. This is the highest victory margin in the district.

In total, 1,02,424 votes were polled. Kiran Kodgi polled 1,02,424 votes, while Dinesh secured 60,868 votes. Kodgi had maintained the lead from the first round of counting. Yashpal Suvarna, who replaced BJP MLA Raghupati Bhat, had a smooth sailing from the first round of counting in Udupi. Yashpal secured 97,079 votes, while Prasadraj Kanchan received 64,303 votes.
