Bhatkal: In a collaborative initiative to promote breast cancer awareness and early detection, KMC Hospital Mangalore, in partnership with Rotary Club Bhatkal and Welfare Hospital Bhatkal, held a breast cancer awareness and screening camp for women at Ameena Palace. Dr. Basila Ameer Ali, a consultant breast surgeon from KMC Hospital, Mangalore, provided valuable insights into breast cancer's impact and shared practical preventive strategies. Formerly affiliated with Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, in the Breast Surgical Oncology Department, Dr. Basila emphasized the critical role of early detection in reducing breast cancer risk.

Dr. Basila’s distinguished background includes her role as a specialist in breast surgical oncology at ACTREC, Kharghar, and as an associate consultant at HNCII, Mumbai. She has contributed significantly to breast cancer research, co-authoring a chapter on sentinel node biopsy validation trials and publishing studies on the effects of cancer-directed therapy on fertility in young breast cancer patients. With experience in over 500 surgeries, including mastectomies, breast conservation, and oncoplastic surgeries, Dr. Basila’s expertise was invaluable at the event.

In her address, Dr. Basila explained that breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women globally and in India. It develops when breast cells grow abnormally, potentially spreading if not detected early. Risk factors include family history, age, genetic mutations, and lifestyle choices; however, she emphasized that regular screenings and a healthy lifestyle are crucial preventive measures.

Using visual aids, Dr. Basila guided attendees on practical ways to lower their breast cancer risk, recommending a balanced diet, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight.

The event began with the National Anthem. Rotary Club Bhatkal’s General Secretary Dr. Zaheer Kola welcomed the guests and participants, and Dr. Basila was introduced by Professor Mushtaque Bavikatte of Anjuman College. A memento was presented to Dr. Basila by Dr. Noorul Ameen Musbah of Welfare Hospital, in appreciation of her contributions. Also present were Dr. Aliya Nazneen from Welfare Hospital, Rotary Club Bhatkal President Ishtiyaq Ruknuddin, members Rajesh Nayak and Shakir Diagnomade, social worker Nazeer Kashimji, Seema Kashimji, and many others.
