Sirsi: In a tragic incident on Sunday evening, five members of the same family drowned in the Shaalmala River in Bairumbe village, Sirsi taluk, while attempting to rescue a five-year-old girl who accidentally fell into the river. Miraculously, the girl survived, but five people drowned while trying to save her.

At around four o'clock in the evening, Maulana Salim's five-year-old daughter was playing near the river when she accidentally fell in. Maulana Saleem immediately jumped into the river to save her and successfully pulled her out. However, in the process, he became exhausted, making it challenging to exit the river. Witnessing this, seven people who attempted to rescue him also fell into the river one by one. In total, eight individuals ended up in the river. While three were rescued, the other five, unfortunately, drowned.

After extensive efforts, all five bodies were recovered from the river around 9 pm on the same night. The victims have been identified as Maulana Hafiz Muhammed Saleem Khalilur Rehman (44), his son Umar Siddique (14), his sister's son Nabil Noor Ahmad Shaikh (22), his sister's daughter Nadia Noor Ahmad Shaikh (20), and Maulana's brother's daughter Misbah Tabussum (21).

Sources revealed that fifteen days ago, a wedding ceremony for the daughter of Maulana Hafiz Muhammad Salim's sister, who resides in Sirsi Ramanbel, took place in Hassan. In celebration of this joyous occasion, Maulana Saleem extended invitations to all his family members for a party held at the tourist spot Shaalmala River in Bairumbe village, Sirsi. It is reported that more than 25 family members participated in this festive event.

Local youth, fishermen, and fire brigade personnel, after strenuous efforts, retrieved all five bodies and transported them to Sirsi Government Hospital. Following post-mortem examinations and necessary procedures, the bodies will be handed over to the relatives. Family sources indicated that the funeral and burial will take place on Monday morning.

A case has been registered at Sirsi rural police station.
