VTU convocation on February 24; 700-plus will get PhD certs

BELAGAVI(TNN): The convocation of the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU-Belagavi) has been scheduled for February 24 at the Jnana Sangama campus here.

Governor Thawarchand Gehlot will preside over the convocation. Professor TG Sitharam, chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), will be the chief guest. Higher education minister CN Ashwath Narayan will be present too.

Addressing a press conference at the university here on Monday, vice-chacellor S Vidyashankar said the varsity is conferring 51,905 BE/BTech degrees, 1,032 BArch, 9 BPlan, 4,279 MBAs, 2,028 MCA, 1,363 MTech, 82 MArch degrees and 1 PG Diploma during the convocation.

This year, the university is also awarding 700-plus PhD scholars and 2 MSc (Engg) by research, and 4 integrated dual degrees to research scholars during the convocation. “This is the highest number of PhD degrees being given by our university during the convocation,” the VC said.
 

The university has selected the names of three industrialists for the Doctor of Science honourary degrees during the convocation — the late Vikram Kirlosakar (posthumous), former vice-chairperson of Toyota Kirloskar Motors, M Lakshminarayan, chairman, WABCO India Ltd and TVS Automobile Solutions Pvt Ltd, and Sachin Sabnis, MD of the Belgaum Ferrocast India Pvt Ltd.

According to Vidyashankar, 63,455 students, including 37,698 boys and 25,757 girls, had appeared for the BE/ BTech examination and which 51,905 have passed.

Among the passed students, 16,724 are from the autonomous colleges.

Chance for old students
The VTU, which was founded on April 1, 1998, is celebrating it silver jubilee year in 2022-23. During this celebration, the varsity has extended an opportunity to its old students, who were unable to complete their studies to get the degree after sitting for an exam.
VC Vidyashankar said the executive council has approved two examinations to be held in April-May and October-November.
