Kundapur: A strong protest was held by the fishermen here in Gangolli against the use of banned methods of fishing on 6th March, Tuesday.

The protest was held to oppose the methods of fishing using lights, which have been banned by the central and state government. For this purpose, the fishermen suspended their activities and gathered at the port to protest.

Addressing the protesters, the president of Gangolli fishermen association Manju Billava said that illegal fishing with the use of bull trawling, pair trawling, perscene boats with artificial lighting on or in the water and gillnet are being practiced by some fishermen even though it has been banned by the government.

“Although the government has warned to cancel the diesel subsidy, fisheries license and registration of those fishermen who violate the rules, the illegal fishing activities are still going on due to which traditional fishermen are facing difficulties and hardships”, he added.

He further demanded that immediate action be taken against those who are defying the rules and engaging into illegal fishing activities or else intense protests will be held together with fishermen from other centres.

Raw fish traders association president Mohan Kharvi, fishermen cooperative society president Naga Kharvi and Byndoor fishermen association president K M Somashekar were also present during this occasion.
