Four children drown in pond in Karnataka’s Yadgiri; grief engulfs village

Yadgiri: In a tragic incident, four young children lost their lives after drowning in a farm pond while attempting to cool off from the heat in Naganur village of Surapura taluk in Karnataka’s Yadgiri district on Sunday, plunging the entire village into deep mourning.

According to sources, the children had gone out to play as it was a school holiday. While playing, they reached a nearby agricultural pond and entered the water to bathe and escape the intense heat. However, unaware of the depth and danger, all four children drowned.

The deceased have been identified as Kiran (6), Basamma (11), Sharath (6), and Hanumesh (7). All of them were residents of the same village and close friends. Their sudden and untimely deaths have left not only their families but also the entire village devastated.

Eyewitnesses said villagers rushed to the spot immediately after learning about the incident and made desperate attempts to rescue the children, but by then it was too late. Heart-rending scenes unfolded as parents broke down upon seeing the bodies of their children.

Reports indicate that the agricultural pond, constructed for farming purposes, lacked protective fencing or safety measures, effectively turning it into a death trap for unsuspecting children. Following the incident, local residents have expressed serious concern and urged authorities to implement safety measures around such ponds to prevent similar tragedies.

Upon receiving information, the Kembhavi police visited the spot and initiated further legal proceedings.
