Kolar: Four Sabarimala pilgrims were killed after their car, which was allegedly overspeeding, rammed into the side barrier of a flyover and plunged into an underpass in Karnataka’s Kolar district in the early hours of Monday, police said.

The accident occurred between 2.15 am and 2.30 am near Abbenahalli village in Malur taluk, they added.

According to police, the victims — all friends — were on their way to Sabarimala in Kerala when the tragedy took place.

Citing preliminary investigation, a senior police officer said the driver was allegedly overspeeding, causing the vehicle to crash into the flyover’s side barrier. The impact was so severe that the car, along with all four male occupants, fell nearly 100 metres into the underpass, killing them on the spot.

The deceased have been identified as Gopi (38), Gowtham Ramesh (28), Hariharan (27) and Jayankar (30). All the victims were reportedly residents of Chennai.

The bodies are being sent for postmortem and will be handed over to their respective families afterward, police added.
