Udupi: An incident was reported here at a house where a person appeared as a beggar, deceived the members and fled away with eight sovereigns of gold on 26th January, Friday.

The fraud occurred at Ayesha’s house at Bailujidde under Udyavar village limits when only Ayesha and her mother-in-law were present at the house.

According to sources, the fraudster came in disguise of a fakir and grabbed their attention with religious talks and made sure that the two ladies were the only ones present at the house.

He then alleged that the gold present in the house has disappeared. Ayesha checked the same and said that it has not. However, the fakir manipulated them into believing that the gold was in danger and convinced them to allow him to do a protection ritual.

As soon as the gold was handed to him, he placed it in an earthen pot, lit a fire with smoke and then left after handing the pot to the inmates. But, soon the ladies realized that there was no gold in the pot and they had been cheated.

Ayesha immediately informed the police who are investigating the case on the basis of the CCTV footage of a nearby house.

A case stands registered at Kaup police station and police are searching for the accused.
