Heavy rains lash coastal Karnataka; schools shut in five Uttara Kannada taluks on Saturday; landslide hits Sadalgi

Bhatkal — Torrential rains have continued to batter coastal Karnataka for the past several days, severely disrupting normal life. Following a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Saturday, July 26, the district administration has declared a holiday for all schools in five coastal taluks of Uttara Kannada — Bhatkal, Honnavar, Kumta, Ankola, and Karwar.

Landslide in Sadalgi Blocks Main Access Road
A landslide occurred on Friday evening on the main road leading to Sadalgi village in Honnavar taluk due to continuous heavy rainfall, cutting off access to the village. Local social worker Muzaffar Shaikh informed that Sadalgi is home to over 250 houses, and the blocked road is the only major route connecting it to nearby areas. He added that an alternative route was already submerged and inaccessible, and now with the main road blocked by debris and loose soil, vehicular movement has come to a complete halt. The village is located approximately 25 km from Honnavar along the Bengaluru-bound highway.

Sharavathi River Overflows; Water Surrounds Mosque in Valki
The Sharavathi River has swollen beyond its danger mark, flooding areas around the Valki mosque in Honnavar taluk. Residents have resorted to using boats to navigate the waterlogged zones. Reports indicate that river water has entered several fields and residential compounds, turning low-lying areas into water bodies.

Water Enters Homes in Baskeri and Hadambaal; Residents Alarmed
In other parts of the Sharavathi belt, particularly in Baskeri and Hadambaal, floodwaters have entered homes, agricultural lands, and compounds, leaving residents distressed. Muzaffar Shaikh stated that the Honnavar Tahsildar and other officials visited the affected areas to assess the situation. Emergency services, including fire and rescue teams, have been placed on high alert. He further mentioned that a large volume of water has accumulated inside the compound of Mullegedde School, raising concerns among the local population.
