Hospital, clinics in Uttara Kannada district produce 950 kg bio-medical waste daily

Karwar: Karnataka Pollution Control Board Officer Vijaya Hegde said, the 805 clinics and hospitals in Uttara Kannada district generate nearly 950 kilos of bio-medical waste a day. However, nearly 232 health units are not registered with the solid waste management units.

Speaking after inaugurating a workshop on ‘Bio-medical waste management-new technology’ organised by Karwar medical college’s department of Medical Education and Community Medicine here on Friday, Hegde said there is a need to regulate on the bio-medical waste.

Pediatrician and Canara IMA Bio-medical Waste Unit President Dr N V Nayak said it is the responsibility of each one of us to manage waste, especially bio-medical waste. Government agencies and society in general should also chip-in for maintenance of cleanliness in the area.

When compared to advanced countries, India, Which is great in many aspects, scores very less in personal hygiene and environment.

College Director Dr Shivananda Doddamani said reuse of certain equipment on the backdrop of increase in the number of AIDS patients. Even the management o of bio-medical waste is of top most priority. Addressing this would result in prevention of several diseases, he said and added that if the doctor forgets to maintain cleanliness would result in curing one patient and spreading the same to several others.
