Puttur: An incident of humanity was witnessed here at Koila village where the Kadaba police stepped forward to aid in the disposal of the dead body of an aged man on 3rd March, Saturday when no one else was lending their hand to help.

The deceased was Asalappa (80yrs) s/o Pananiswamy, a native of Jambadahalli in Tarikere taluk, Chikkamagaluru district.

According to sources, Asalappa body was found lying by the roadside at Gulgodi in the village on Saturday. However, no one except his son would come forward to perform the funeral including his relatives.

The reason for this show of inhumanity was the superstitious belief that it would not be auspicious to carry on the ritual as the Nema of a Daiva was to be held the next day in the village.

However, the news spread and when the police heard that the body of the senior citizen was lying unattended, the Kadaba police arrived at the spot. Police Sub-Inspector Prakash Devadiga, ASI Ravi and Home Guard volunteer Sandhesh brought the body to the village by lending their shoulders to carry the body back to the home of the family.

This incident has been widely reported in social media and a reward was announced by the Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Ravikanthe Gowda appreciating the humane action of the officers.

“A Letter of Appreciation will also be presented to the local journalist Balakrishna Koila, who first reported the incident”, he added.
