Karwar: After starting Indira Canteens in Bengaluru, the State government plans to open Indira Canteens in all major taluks and district headquarters across the State.
In this regard, Uttara Kannada District Urban Development Cell plans to open Indira Canteens at 11 places in the district.
Once in place, people in the district will be able to get breakfast and lunch at a lower price in the coming year.
Building construction work has been given to Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Corporation (KRIDL) and Urban Development Cell has handed over necessary space for canteen construction. Canteens will be set up in three city municipal councils, four town municipal councils and in four other places in the district.
Following locations have been identified to set up Indira Canteens in the district.
Near Hindu High School in Karwar, near Canara Bank on J N Road in Dandeli, near Devikere Bhootappa Katte in Sirsi, near Vallabhai Patel Garden on Port Road in Bhatkal, near Old Fish Market in Kumta, near Maruti Galli in Haliyal, near Government Hospital in Ankola, on PWD land near Bus Stand in Honnavar, on government land on Hubballi-Sirsi Main Road in Mundgod, Kondli in Siddapur and near town panchayat in Yellapur.
Totally Rs 8.61 crore funds have been released for the district in this regard. Rs 5.83 crore has been set aside for canteen construction including Rs 53 lakh for each canteen. Of the remaining funds, Rs 64 lakh has been given to KRIDL (11%) maintenance cost and Rs 19 lakh for purchase of utensils.
The breakfast and lunch will be available at Rs 5 and 10 respectively in all the canteens. The 30% of financial assistance must be obtained from the labour cess of the Labour Welfare Department. While 70% will be paid by the Urban Development Department.
Assistant Executive Engineer of Urban Development Cell R P Naik said committee of ten officials has been formed under chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner to supervise the canteens. Planning Director of the Urban Development Cell will be member secretary.
