Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has extended until September 30 the deadline for the ongoing door-to-door survey of beneficiaries under the ‘Gruha Jyothi’ scheme, officials said on Monday.
One of the five guarantee schemes of the Congress government, Gruha Jyothi provides up to 200 units of free electricity to households.
The verification survey of beneficiaries of the scheme, launched in July 2023, began on July 1. The initial deadline for completing the exercise was August 31.
The government issued an order on Monday extending the survey period by another month.
As of May 2026, there were 68,86,860 Gruha Jyothi beneficiaries across eight districts under the jurisdiction of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company.
Of these, 46,70,588 beneficiaries, or nearly 68 per cent, had been covered under the survey as of August 31, BESCOM said.
BESCOM Managing Director N Shivashankara appealed to the remaining beneficiaries to cooperate with meter readers and provide the necessary documents when staff visit their premises from September 1.
BESCOM said it had received reports of some beneficiaries residing in apartments in Bengaluru not cooperating with staff during the survey and urged residents to facilitate the verification process.
Under the guidelines for locked houses, meter readers will make up to three visits at different time slots. During each visit, staff will record the latitude and longitude of the premises and mark the status as “DL” (Door Lock) in the mobile application.
An SMS containing the meter reader’s name and contact number will be sent to the beneficiary’s registered mobile number each time the house is marked as locked, up to three times. Beneficiaries have been asked to contact the concerned meter reader to complete the verification.
Premises marked as “VACANT” can be registered on the app only after staff physically visit the location and record its latitude and longitude, BESCOM said.
Beneficiaries requiring assistance with the survey can contact the BESCOM helpline numbers, it added.
