Karwar: DC urges schools to ensure 100% SSLC results

Karwar: Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner (DC) K. Lakshmi Priya on Wednesday directed headmasters, teachers and education department officials to collectively ensure a 100 per cent pass result in all schools of the Karwar educational district in the forthcoming SSLC examinations.

Chairing a review meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here to assess measures taken to improve SSLC results, Lakshmi Priya said the district had secured third place at the state level in last year’s SSLC results and should strive for further improvement this year, ensuring that no student fails.

Emphasising the importance of the SSLC examination in shaping students’ future, she said teachers shoulder a major responsibility in preparing students for success. She urged teachers to utilise their experience effectively and make sincere efforts to ensure that every student clears the examination.

The Deputy Commissioner clarified that securing a state rank was not the sole objective and stressed that all students should pass with good marks. She instructed officials to analyse half-yearly and first preparatory examination results, identify slow learners and provide them with special and individual attention to help them pass.

Lakshmi Priya also directed schools to closely monitor students with frequent absenteeism. She said teachers, along with School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) members, should conduct home visits, counsel parents and students, and ensure regular attendance. Teachers were asked to make use of model question papers prepared by the examination board and additional question papers developed by the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) to support academically weaker students.

Assuring full cooperation from the district administration, the Deputy Commissioner said motivational letters would once again be sent to students, as done last year. She added that officials from various departments would visit motivation camps to encourage students and that phone-in programmes would also be organised.

Addressing the meeting, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr. Dileesh Shashi said the district should perform better than last year and aim for the top position in the state. He advised teachers to devote additional time to students who had failed school-level examinations and ensure that students attempt all questions without leaving any unanswered.

Earlier, Karwar educational district Deputy Director Latha Naik said several measures had been implemented to improve SSLC results. She informed that the syllabus had been completed by the end of December, student pairing had been done for academic support, and half-yearly examination results were being analysed subject-wise to enhance performance.

She said teachers were making daily wake-up calls to students, nodal officers had been appointed at the district level for the five taluks to closely monitor results, and parent-teacher meetings were being held every 15 days to review student progress. Home visits were conducted to address absenteeism, special counselling and training sessions were organised for teachers, and online preparatory question papers provided by the board were being utilised. A question bank has also been prepared, and a district-level team of subject experts and a helpline are being set up, she added.

The meeting was attended by DIET Principal N.R. Hegde, officials of the education department, taluk education officers from Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar and Bhatkal, and headmasters of various schools.
