Karwar: Since the imposition of model code of conduct (March 27) in the district for the assembly election, the excise department has seized 2879 liters of liquors worth Rs 10.22 lakh.
In the last one and half month the excise department officials conducted raids on 1379 locations, one of the highest in the history of district.
Honnavar saw the highest number of raids and seizure of liquor, which were being transported illegally. Of the total 1379 raids, Honnavar officials conducted 217 raids.
They also seized one multi-utility vehicle and an auto rickshaw transporting illegal liquors. The total seizure by Honnavar officials is said to be Rs 4 lakh. Six persons have been arrested under heinous crimes and 17 others under the 15A cases. Department officials have also recovered 14 liters of Goa wines, 20 liters of feni, 49 liters of beer and 59 liters of Indian wine.
Officials have also seized 53.69 metric tons of molasses, worth Rs 2.25 lakh that was being transported in two tankers near Haliyal.
Haliyal officials have also booked five heinous crimes and 24 cases under Section 15A. A total 122 excise officials seized liquor Rs 65000. Taluk-level officials arrested 31 people for related crimes.
For violation of various rules, the department cancelled licenses of 12 liquor shops across the district. Of them, cases against nine were withdrawn after inquiry. While cases against three others are in various stages, officials said.
Excise Deputy Commissioner LA Manjunath said the department had enforced strict points in the district. Though, this might have resulted in the loss for collection of taxes, our top priority was to make sure that free and fair elections was held.
