Karwar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) have issued a heavy rain warning for coastal taluks in Uttara Kannada district, prompting Deputy Commissioner (DC) Lakshmi Priya K. to issue an advisory urging the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
According to the forecast, the region may experience intense rainfall over the next 24 hours, with the warning in effect until 5:30 am on July 20. The authorities have expressed concern about the possibility of sudden flooding, particularly in low-lying and landslide-prone areas where the soil is already saturated due to recent rains.
In response to the alert, the Deputy Commissioner has urged residents and tourists to refrain from entering rivers, sea areas, or other water bodies. Those residing near riverbanks, especially along the Aghanashini River—which is reportedly flowing above the danger mark as per the Central Water Commission—are advised to move to safer locations. People living in hilly or slope-prone areas are also encouraged to relocate depending on the severity of the rainfall.
The administration has called on parents to prevent children from approaching the seashore, and warned against any recreational activities near coastal regions until the situation improves.
For emergencies, the district’s 24x7 control room can be reached at the toll-free number 08382-229857 or via WhatsApp at 9483511015.
