Kin of landslide victims yet to get compensation

Karwar: Even after eight years, the kin of Zariwada (Kadwada) landslide victims has not yet given compensation by the Union Government.

As many as 21 people lost their lives following a massive landslide at Zariwada of Kadwada village near Karwar on October 2, 2009. Rajan Venkatesh Kotharkar lost his mother Kamala, brother Rajesh and sister Reshma in the tragedy. He was working in Goa at the time of landslide.

After the incident, the state government had declared Rs 1 lakh compensation to the kin of the deceased and the amount was given to all families. At that time, the Union Government had also announced compensation under the natural calamity fund, but Rajan Kotharkar has not got it.

On Friday Rajan submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the Additional Deputy Commissioner requesting the Union Govenrment to release compensation. Social worker Madhav Naik and members of Janashkati Vedike were present on the occasion.
