Konenala overburdened during rainy season

Karwar: Karwar is a small city surrounded by hills at two sides, river on one side and Arabian sea on the another.

Whenever it rains, the hilltop water flows towards the city and then reaches Arabian Sea. Ironically no drains in Karwar are scientifically designed and it causes flood-like situation in many residential areas during monsoon.

The whole city is dependent on a single drain -- Konenala that carries the city drain to Arabian Sea. In simple words, it works beyond its capacity in the rainy season. Ravi Ankolekar, a resident of Linganayakwada, said the drain connecting hill area to Karwar main drain was flowing in private land.

Now the landowner has constructed compound, therefore drain water changed its flow and flowing towards their houses. Despite many appeals, the Karwar city municipal council (CMC) has not taken any solution and residents face problem for the last couple of years. As it is a tough job to clear drain due to gravity problem, efforts of CMC to find solution went waste.

Therefore the CMC made compulsory for apartments to make their own sewage safety tank and no apartment should leave any kind of waste water to drains. But in the city, most of the apartments do not have safety tanks and their waste is being released to drains.

Despite knowing all these things and facing ire from public, the CMC has not stopped giving permission to such apartments, according to sources. A senior staffs of Karwar CMC said concerned authorities are not bothered about rules and regulations of constructions.

“Simply sitting in office, they give permission for new buildings that are violating the norms brazenly. Unscientific works of apartments and the draina g e system is affecting Karwar city,” he added.
