Kumta: Powerful lightning witnessed in Kumta on Thursday night, damaged a century-old Holy Cross erected atop Honmav Church.

The Mother Mary face scripted on the Holy Cross has been damaged, while the top side of the Holy Cross too borne the brunt.

The Holy Cross was established on September 25, 1900. To commemorate its 100th year, Bishop Derrick Fernandes had taken part.

Church authorities have urged the Assistant commissioner to repair the Holy Cross at the earliest.

A tree crashed on a house belonging to Chandrakanth Bobbuheni in Kaglad Hini in Kumta taluk. A tree uprooted and fell on the house belonging to Mangala Harikant in Hegde village. Village accountants conducted inspection and have filed a report.
