Mangaluru: U-turns on NH-66 turn into black spots; seven accidents in six days between Mulki and Surathkal

Mangaluru: U-turns along National Highway-66 between Mulki and Surathkal are increasingly turning into dangerous black spots, posing a serious threat to commuters and motorists. In just the last six days, as many as seven major road accidents have been reported on the stretch between Haleangadi and Surathkal. Several people sustained grievous injuries in these incidents and are currently undergoing treatment in intensive care units at different hospitals.

Junctions along the National Highway passing through Padupanambur, Haleangadi Pete, Pavanje Junction, Mukka Srinivas Hospital Junction, near Tadanbail Supreme Hall, Surathkal Marigudi Junction, and the junction near Surathkal Suraj Hotel have been identified as accident-prone black spots due to recurring mishaps.

Local residents attribute the rising number of accidents to unscientific dividers and poorly designed U-turns constructed by the National Highways Authority. These dividers reportedly force vehicles to move in the wrong direction at several locations, significantly increasing the risk of collisions. In addition, barricades placed in the name of accident-prone zones are disrupting the smooth flow of traffic, while the absence of proper signboards near several U-turns is further aggravating the situation.

The police department has written to the National Highways Authority, urging immediate action to close unscientific and hazardous U-turns along the highway. In this connection, the police have informed that the U-turn located at Tadanbail is likely to be closed shortly.

It may be recalled that these U-turns have been responsible for several serious accidents in the past as well, resulting in loss of lives and severe injuries. Public representatives and local residents have demanded that the police, in coordination with the National Highways Authority, permanently close dangerous U-turns to ensure the safety of commuters and protect public life and property.
