Haliyal: Shankar Belgaonkar of the Congress party has been elected president of the Haliyal Town Muncipal Council (TMC). As he was the only nominee for the post, Tahasildar Vidyadhar Gulguli declared him elected on Friday. 

According to an internal understanding in the ruling Congress, Belgaonkar will be the last president in the five-year tenure of the Congress. He has a 15-month term. Belgaonkar said streamlining of the 24x7 drinking water scheme in the town and cleanliness will be his priorities.
