Yellapur: One person was killed on the spot, and three others sustained serious injuries, after the car, in which they were travelling in was hit by another car from behind near Tenginageri Cross of Kiruvathi village in Yellapur on Wednesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Basayya Halayya Sangurumath (64), a resident of Shettar colony in Dharwad and a retired government employee.

The injured were identified as Neela Basayya Sangurumath (58), Sarooja Shivalingaiya Halimani (55) and Asha S Balikai (28) and are being treated at the government hospital in Yellapur, whose condition is said to be serious.

According to police officials, the accident took place when the car in which the victims were traveling was being towed by a pick-up vehicle, and was hit from behind by another car, driven by Shivalingaiya Hiremath (66), a resident of Navanagar near Hubballi. However, Hiremath escaped with minor injuries.

Yellapur police have registered a case against Hiremath.
