Bhatkal: One fisherman lost his life after a boat capsized due to high waves while fishing in the Arabian Sea at Murdeshwar Beach, under Bhatkal taluk. Four others were rescued with the help of fishermen who were onshore.
Of the four rescued, two—Ibrahim Fakira Mulla (50) and Abu Mohammed Umra (50)—have been admitted to Murdeshwar RNS Hospital, while the other two, Abdul Sami Ilyas Kalu (21) and Muhammad Shafi Tadlikar (45), are safe. The deceased has been identified as Hyder Ali Zakaria Babu (44).
Speaking to SahilOnline, Abdul Sami recounted, "This morning, Thursday, around 6 o'clock, the five of us were on a fishing boat, laying nets in the sea to catch fish. After we had finished setting the nets, we were returning to shore when a sudden wave hit our boat, throwing Ibrahim into the sea. Before we could regain control, another large wave capsized the boat, causing the rest of us to fall into the sea."
He further added, "About 40 fishermen onshore rushed to rescue us, along with others nearby. Four of us were rescued by another boat, though two of us were exhausted. Sadly, Hyder Ali drowned. Within half an hour, he was pulled from the water, but by then, he had already stopped breathing."
After the post-mortem at Murdeshwar Government Hospital, Hyder Ali's body was brought to his home on Beach Road at around 1 pm, where hundreds gathered to pay their respects. According to family members, funeral prayers will be held after Maghrib Namaz at Murdeshwar Jamia Masjid, followed by burial in the nearby graveyard. Hyder Ali is survived by his wife and three children, including two daughters, and resided near Murdeshwar Beach.
