Bhatkal: One person succumbed to injuries and another was injured when their bike skidded on Gunvante NH in Honnavar taluk, about 25 km from Bhatkal, on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Abubakar Kampa (49), a resident of Nakhuda Mohalla in Manki. The injured pillion rider has been identified as Hayat, a resident of Tonka, near Honnavar.
Sources indicate that both men worked as weavers of fishing nets in Tonka. Abubakar and Hayat were returning to work in Tonka after attending a relative’s wedding ceremony in Nakhuda Mohalla, Manki.
While returning, their bike suddenly skidded on the National Highway at Gunvante, causing both to fall and sustain serious injuries. They were immediately rushed to Honnavar Hospital. After initial treatment, they were being transferred to Mangalore on the doctor’s advice, but Abubakar succumbed to his injuries around 7 PM, before reaching Udupi. Hayat has been admitted to a hospital in Udupi, where his condition is reported to be stable.
Abubakar's body has been shifted to Honnavar Government Hospital for post-mortem.
It should be noted that light showers continued from morning to afternoon in coastal Karnataka, including Bhatkal. In such conditions, it is crucial for riders, especially those on two-wheelers, to drive carefully as roads become more slippery during the initial rains.
