Patna: The Bharatiya Janata Party alleged that one of its leaders, Vijay Kumar Singh, aged 55, was killed in a police baton charge during a protest against the Bihar government's teacher recruitment policy. According to The Indian Express, the authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death.

According to sources, the protest march, led by BJP MPs Janardhan Singh Sigriwal and Ashok Yadav, along with several party members, took place from Gandhi Maidan in Patna towards the Vidhan Sabha. The police intervened, using baton charges, water cannons, and tear gas shells to disperse the protestors. Sigriwal and several other BJP members sustained injuries.

The Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government has been facing protests since the state Cabinet decided to remove the domicile clause for applicants, thus opening up 1.7 lakh vacancies to citizens from across the country. This decision has been backed by the BJP, which called for the protest march as a show of strength to demand the restoration of the domicile clause and the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav.

Following Singh's death, who was the party's district secretary general, state BJP president Samrat Choudhary announced that the party would file a murder case against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, as reported by The New Indian Express. Choudhary stated that the party would continue their agitation against the state government, and a Vidhan Sabha march has been planned for Friday to protest the police baton charge.
