Bhatkal: Following chain-snatching incidents in Sirsi and Ankola in Uttara Kannada, another incident occurred in Bhatkal.
According to police sources, two youths, approximately 30 years old, approached a fishmonger named Nagamma Moger while riding a motorcycle near Sonarkeri cross in Shirali village. They inquired about fish, and as Nagamma was about to display the fish from her basket, one of them grabbed her by the neck and snatched her gold chain, valued at around Rs. 87,000. They promptly fled the scene after successfully taking the chain. Nagamma reported that one of the riders was wearing a helmet, while the pillion rider was not wearing one. She also informed the police that one of the riders was wearing a checkered shirt.
Inspector Chandan Gopal and rural police personnel from Bhatkal rushed to the scene promptly upon receiving the information and gathered the necessary details. According to police sources, the incident occurred in Shirali around noon.
Within a few hours of the Bhatkal incident, a similar occurrence was reported in Honnavar, a neighboring taluka. It was observed that in the Honnavar incident as well, the culprits escaped after snatching a gold chain from a woman's neck. It was noted that in this incident, one of the bikers was also wearing a checkered shirt. The incident in Honnavar occurred at 6:30 pm.
Police sources have indicated that on September 18, a similar incident occurred in Sagar, in the neighboring district of Shimoga. Prior to this, incidents in a similar vein were reported in Ankola and Sirsi, as covered by SahilOnline.
It has been learned that this chain-snatching gang is currently active in Bhatkal and Honnavar. The public is urged to exercise vigilance.
