Bhatkal: A theft was reported in Shirali - Chitrapur village in the taluk on Friday, during which thieves broke into a house and stole cash amounting to Rs. 35,000 along with jewelry worth Rs. 18 lakh, all within a span of two hours.
The incident occurred between 9 am to 11 am on Friday.
According to sources, Manjunath Naik, also known as Mahesh, left for work at around 8 am in his mini lorry, while his wife, Baby Naik, departed for work at approximately 8:50 am. She works in a paper factory located about one and a half kilometers away from their residence.
Upon Manjunath Naik's return home at 11:10 am, he was surprised to find the door of the house open, the cupboard ransacked, and belongings scattered. Upon investigation, it was discovered that approximately Rs. 35,000 in cash and approximately 250 grams of gold jewelry were missing, valued at around Rs. 18 lakhs.
An intriguing aspect of the incident is that both the front and back doors remained intact, leading to speculation that the thief may have been hiding inside the house beforehand, or that Baby Naik may have forgotten to lock the door before leaving for work. The exact circumstances surrounding the entry of the thief into the house will only be determined after further investigation.
Upon receiving the report, the rural police team, led by Inspector Chandan Gopal, promptly arrived at the scene. Subsequently, a thorough inspection and investigation were conducted, with assistance sought from a dog squad and fingerprint experts from Karwar. The investigation, including the examination by the dog squad and fingerprint experts, continued into the evening.
A case has been registered at the Bhatkal rural police station, and investigations are ongoing.
