Mangaluru: In a bid to address the alarming infant and maternal mortality rates in Dakshina Kannada district, DC Mullai Muhilan MP has urged officials to intensify efforts. With 39 deaths per 1,000 live births, the district has reported seven cases of maternal mortality between April and November, prompting the DC to emphasize the necessity for enhanced coordination between the health department and hospitals.

Despite boasting excellent healthcare infrastructure and a skilled medical workforce, the district's concerning mortality statistics have raised eyebrows. The DC stressed the importance of meticulous healthcare management to curb maternal mortality, emphasizing the continuous monitoring of pregnant women's health by Asha workers.

To bolster awareness and skills, health department officials have been directed to organize training programs on infant and maternal mortality for Asha and anganwadi workers. The DC also proposed campaigns utilizing local language awareness videos for prenatal and postnatal care, leveraging social media platforms to reach pregnant women.

During a district-level review meeting, family members of maternal mortality victims voiced their concerns, underscoring the urgency for a comprehensive strategy to tackle the issue. As authorities intensify efforts, the community is hopeful that these measures will contribute to a significant reduction in infant and maternal mortality in the region.
