Udupi: In a tragic road accident, four members of a family were killed when their bike, carrying five people, was hit by a mini lorry. The accident occurred on the Karkala-Dharmasthala State Highway near Pajegudde, under the jurisdiction of Karkala Rural Police Station, at around 4 p.m. on Monday.
According to police sources, Suresh Acharya (36), his wife Meenakshi Acharya (32), daughters Samiksha (7) and Sushmita (5), and son Sushant (2) were traveling from Venur in Dakshina Kannada to their home in Nallur. The empty lorry, traveling from Bajagoli to Dharmasthala, hit the bike while it was taking a turn near Pajegudde.
It is reported that three people died on the spot, while one of the daughters succumbed to her injuries after being taken to the hospital.
Suresh's wife, Meenakshi Acharya (32), was seriously injured in the accident and was initially shifted to a nearby hospital. Later, she was transferred to Udupi District Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.
Karkala Rural Police have arrested the mini lorry driver, Hemant, on charges of reckless driving. Further investigations are underway.
