Bhatkal: Coastal Karnataka, including Bhatkal, Honnavar, Kumta and Ankola, has been receiving heavy rain for the past two weeks. Today, Thursday, more heavy rain has been reported, causing many low-lying areas to turn into ponds and many villages to be cut off.

The Chandika River on Katgaal National Highway 766 has overflowed its banks, disrupting communication between Kumta and Sirsi. A bus full of passengers was stuck in the water in Katgaal, but with the help of local people and Panchayat officers, the passengers were shifted to a safe place using boats.

In Honnavar, National Highway 69 in Bhaskeri has been blocked due to a landslide and a fallen tree on the highway.

The traffic system was also affected on Bhatkal Ranginkatte NH 66 due to the accumulation of heavy water. Problems arose on Sagar Road near Shamsuddin Circle due to the accumulation of a huge amount of water. Later, the drains were cleaned by the town municipality. Waterlogging at many house compounds in Haneef Abad has also been reported, along with incidents of water entering many gardens in the taluk.

Due to heavy rain, roads have sunk in many places in Bhatkal because of substandard underground drainage work. The condition of the road from Kogti to Azad Nagar was already poor, and now it is difficult to walk on. Additionally, the condition of Muhiddin Street in Madina Colony, Dongar Palli, Abdul Kalam Road, Azad Nagar, Kargedde, and Muzammil Masjid Road has also deteriorated due to rainwater, making it difficult for school vans to pass through those areas. There have been incidents of the Anjuman school van getting stuck on Abdul Kalam Road and the Siddhartha school van getting stuck in Gorte of the taluk.

In Honnavar taluk, the Gundubal River has overflowed due to heavy rains, resulting in water accumulation in many villages.

The water is overflowing in Valki of the taluk, causing the entire area around the Valki Jamia Masjid to turn into a pond. Boats are now plying on roads where people used to walk. People are worried about the infiltration of water into many houses in Honnavar's Hadinbal. It has been reported that heavy rain in the ghat section is causing water to flow from the hills into rivers that pass through many villages.

The overflowing Kali River in Ankola has turned the riverside areas into ponds, filling many houses with water.

Along with Uttara Kannada, the neighboring districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada have also reported heavy rainfall, causing several low-lying areas to turn into ponds.
