Heavy rains prompt school closures in Bhatkal and surrounding areas

Bhatkal: Due to heavy rain in the evening, the taluk administration has declared a holiday for schools and PU colleges in Bhatkal on Tuesday. Bhatkal Block Education Officer (BEO) VD Moger issued a press release around 10:30 PM, stating that Bhatkal Assistant Commissioner (AC) Dr. Naina directed the closure of schools and PU colleges on Tuesday, 9th July, owing to heavy rains and a red alert from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

At 8:30 PM, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Uttara Kannada had issued an order predicting heavy rain for Uttara Kannada on Tuesday, based on the red alert from the IMD. Consequently, schools and PU colleges in Honnavar and Kumta were instructed to close, though Bhatkal was not mentioned in the order.

Bhatkal had experienced slightly less rain on Monday compared to Sunday. However, by 9 PM, heavy rain began in Bhatkal. Following the direction of the Bhatkal AC, the Bhatkal BEO announced the closure of all schools and PU colleges in Bhatkal due to the restarting of heavy rain.

Earlier in the day, at 5 PM, the Udupi DC declared a holiday for all schools and colleges due to the forecast of heavy rain in the Udupi district. The Dakshina Kannada DC announced the closure of schools and PU colleges around 8:30 PM, while the holiday declaration for Bhatkal, Kumta, and Honnavar was made at 10:30 PM.

The IMD had issued a red alert predicting heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada.
