Mangaluru: An incident in Mangaluru has revealed the devastating consequences of online fraud, as a retired woman lost a staggering sum of Rs 72.86 lakh.

The victim, who was contacted by individuals claiming to be Sathyam Pandey and Mittal on WhatsApp, fell prey to their false promises of winning a lottery.

Following their instructions, she linked her bank accounts to a specified phone number.

Unbeknownst to her, Rs 50.55 lakh and Rs 22.31 lakh were surreptitiously transferred to her State Bank of India and Indian Bank accounts, respectively, between October 26 and November 2.

The discovery of the fraud only surfaced during a routine bank visit, prompting the registration of a case at the CEN police station.
