Bhatkal: The Linganmakki reservoir, part of the Sharavati project, is experiencing significant inflow due to continuous rainfall in the Sharavati catchment area. As of 8 a.m. today, July 31, the water level reached 1812.65 feet, which is 86.51% of its maximum capacity of 1819.00 feet.

The inflow rate today exceeds 82,000 cusecs, indicating that the reservoir could soon reach its maximum capacity. To address this situation, the Executive Engineer has announced that excess water will be released from the reservoir tomorrow, August 1, at 10 a.m. for dam safety.

In a press release, the Executive Engineer advised residents living downstream and along the riverbanks to evacuate to safer areas with their belongings and livestock. Tourists are urged to avoid entering the river during this period.

It is important to note that once the water is released from the Linganmakki dam, it will flow to the Gersuppa dam in Honavar taluk, which has limited water storage capacity. This will likely necessitate further water releases from Gersuppa, raising flood concerns downstream and along the riverbanks. Residents are advised to take precautionary measures to protect their lives and property.

The Gersuppa dam is located approximately 60 km from Bhatkal and falls under the Honnavar taluk jurisdiction.
