Mamata Banerjee Calls for BJP's Exit from Centre Over Modi's Suggestive Post on Quit India Movement Anniversary

Calcutta: Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, has launched a vehement attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), urging the party to step away from its position at the Centre. Her pointed remarks came in response to a cryptic social media post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the anniversary of the Quit India Movement, which seemed to target the anti-BJP INDIA bloc.

In a speech that lasted for around 50 minutes during a state government event in Jhargram, Banerjee held nothing back in her criticism of the saffron regime. She drew attention to the struggles faced by ordinary citizens due to the Centre's policies, focusing on frozen welfare funds from the Centre and Delhi's economic mismanagement.

Banerjee's impassioned address called for the BJP to relinquish power, stating, "We ousted the British with 'Bharat Chhodo' (Quit India), and now we're telling this Centre to leave its seat in Delhi. BJP, it's your turn to quit," eliciting a thunderous response from the crowd.

The Quit India Movement, initiated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1942, demanded an end to British colonial rule in India. Interestingly, the Hindu Mahasabha, a precursor to the BJP, had supported the British response to the movement.

In the morning of that same day, Modi's social media post marked the Quit India Movement's anniversary, subtly targeting the anti-BJP alliance. However, Banerjee dismissed Modi's remarks and reiterated her unwavering commitment to her nation.

"No matter what they say, I'm not leaving my country. This is my motherland, my nation. I was born here," Banerjee declared, firmly countering any insinuations.

Banerjee's speech delved into various issues, including unfulfilled promises by Modi's government and her resistance to the BJP's push for a uniform civil code. She also castigated the BJP for its divisive politics and expressed her determination to remove the BJP government in favor of the people's welfare.

Furthermore, Banerjee criticized the Centre's indifference to crises such as the plight of Dalits across the country and the ongoing turmoil in Manipur.

Her speech not only underscored the growing tensions between her party and the BJP but also shed light on the larger political landscape in India.
