New Delhi: The Parliament witnessed another day of chaos and adjournments on Tuesday, with both Houses unable to conduct proceedings amid heated exchanges between the Opposition and the ruling BJP. The stalemate revolved around allegations against industrialist Gautam Adani and accusations linking the Congress to US billionaire George Soros.
In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar repeatedly pleaded for order, requesting members to allow him to at least name the four MPs who had submitted notices under Rule 267. However, neither side relented, forcing him to adjourn the House first till noon and later for the entire day.
Amid the din, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien was allowed to raise a point of order, but the proceedings were adjourned just as he began speaking.
Opposition’s Charges:
Outside the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused the government of avoiding debate over the Adani controversy. "The government is afraid of a discussion. It is their strategy to stall the House," she told reporters.
Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, echoed similar sentiments. "The government is running away from parliamentary scrutiny. We are ready to cooperate in running the House, but they are deliberately avoiding it," he said.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor described the adjournments as evidence of the ruling BJP’s reluctance to face the Opposition’s questions. "The BJP clearly has no desire to run the House. Today, there was no provocation from us, yet they adjourned proceedings," Tharoor remarked.
Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose criticized the government, calling the disruption "a deliberate attempt to paralyze democracy." "This is the first time in history that a government itself is stalling Parliament," she said.
Protests Over Adani Row:
Earlier in the day, several Opposition MPs staged a demonstration in the Parliament premises, carrying black bags with caricatures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gautam Adani, along with slogans like "Modi Adani Bhai Bhai." The protest was led by Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, joined by leaders from the DMK, JMM, and Left parties.
Government’s Response:
The ruling BJP MPs continued to raise allegations of an Opposition-Soros nexus, calling it a threat to national security. Despite Speaker Om Birla’s appeal for calm and constructive dialogue, both sides remained at loggerheads.
This deadlock marks yet another day of parliamentary inaction during the ongoing session, with both the government and the Opposition accusing each other of stalling the democratic process.
