Bhatkal: The protest persisted on Tuesday in opposition to the removal of the flag pole near the stone board of Devi Nagar outside Makkah Masjid at Jali. However, permission to install the pole was denied. Protestors were directed to submit a memorandum to the Jali Panchayat, which would make the appropriate decision regarding the installation of a nameplate board or pole.
Recalling Sunday's events, the stone board outside Makkah Masjid was repainted as Devi Nagar, accompanied by the installation of an adjacent pole. The members of the mosque asserted that the installation of the pole was intended for activists from the Sangh Parivar to deliberately plant the saffron flag outside the mosque, aiming to create tension in the area leading up to the parliamentary election—a situation they are determined not to allow. The pole was removed around 4 o'clock on Monday morning under police security, following the Chief Officer's instructions. Members of the Sangh Parivar gathered outside the mosque, vehemently protesting the pole's removal. The police managed to persuade the protestors to disperse, assuring them of a meeting at the Tahsildar office on Tuesday morning to express their views.
During a meeting with Jalipatan Panchayat councillors chaired by the Tahsildar on Tuesday at 10:00, it was decided that no board or pole would be allowed outside the mosque, maintaining the status quo. The Panchayat members emphasized the need for caution by the police and authorities, as some individuals sought to create a tense atmosphere for political gain in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Despite being advised to present their demands at the Tahsildar office, protestors gathered outside Makkah Masjid and insisted on installing the Devi Nagar board. They clarified their intention was not to hang a flag outside the mosque but to mount the Devi Nagar board at a height visible to passersby. When protestors attempted to install the board, the police intervened, leading to prolonged verbal clashes. Tahsildar Tippe Swamy, Additional SP Mr. CT Jayakumar, Bhatkal DySP Mr. Shrikant, and other senior police officials were present. Additional SP CT Jayakumar urged protestors to submit their memorandum to the Chief Officer or Tahsildar to address their demands.
Approximately a hundred protestors, including members of the Sangh Parivar and BJP, contended that Jali patan Panchayat had only permitted a madrasa at Devi Nagar cross. They alleged that constructing a mosque alongside the madrasa was illegal. The protestors were instructed to approach the Chief Officer to submit their demands in writing.
Ultimately, the protestors reached the Panchayat office and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Officer, alleging that Makkah Masjid is illegal and demanding legal action be taken.
