Bhatkal: In a tragic incident on Tuesday, two schoolboys drowned in a pond in Byndoor amid heavy rainfall. The victims, identified as 14-year-old Safwan Shanu and Nagendra Devadiga, were both students of Class 9 at Byndoor Government High School.

According to reports, Safwan, originally from Shiroor and residing in Byndoor for the past four years, left home around 4:00 PM to play. When he did not return by evening, his family grew concerned and began searching for him. They also filed a missing person's report with the Byndoor Police.

Late at night, clothes, slippers, and bicycles belonging to the two boys were discovered near a pond close to the Byndoor Police Station, raising suspicions that they had gone swimming and drowned.

The Byndoor Police and fire brigade immediately launched a search operation. However, the darkness and heavy rainfall made it difficult to locate the bodies. Upon learning of the incident, a team of expert divers from Bhatkal—including Ikrash Motiya, Ikruma Motiya, Abdul Basit Muallim, Ismail Shabandri, and Hassan KM—quickly arrived at the scene. Braving the rain and late hour, they commenced their search.

At around 1:30 AM, the divers successfully recovered Safwan’s body, followed shortly afterward by Nagendra’s. Local youth from Byndoor and Halgeri also assisted in the rescue operation.

Both bodies were taken to Byndoor Government Hospital for post-mortem formalities, after which they will be handed over to their respective families. Byndoor Police Inspector expressed his deep gratitude to the Bhatkal divers, who put aside all differences and rushed to help recover the bodies late at night.

Byndoor is located approximately 20 kilometers from Bhatkal.
