Udupi: In response to public complaints regarding the utilization of artificial coloring and tasting powder (Ajinomoto, a sodium glutamate) in the dishes served by roadside eateries along Malpe Beach Road, a team of officials led by the Udupi City Municipal Commissioner conducted a surprise inspection. 

During the raid, authorities confiscated six kilograms of tasting powder and artificial colors commonly employed in food preparations. The targeted establishments, comprising twenty eateries and small canteens along the stretch connecting Malpe Beach, specialize in delicacies made from fish, chicken, and Chinese cuisine. These roadside eateries play a crucial role in catering to the culinary needs of tourists visiting the beach.

The inspection initiative was carried out under the directive of the Udupi District Commissioner, who cited observed violations of food preparation regulations and cleanliness standards. An official stated, "We have identified instances of non-compliance with food preparation rules and inadequate cleanliness practices."

In response to these findings, the owners of the affected establishments have been cautioned against using tasting powder and artificial colorants in their food preparation processes. Additionally, they were directed to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings. Furthermore, these establishments were instructed to refrain from using disposable plastic glasses and plates, with a recommendation to adopt stainless steel alternatives. Rayappa, the CMC Commissioner, issued a stern warning that any future raids revealing the presence of harmful chemicals or coloring agents may result in the closure of the offending hotels, coupled with the imposition of substantial fines.
