Bhatkal: The ongoing construction of the four-lane National Highway near Mood Bhatkal Bypass has transformed the area into an accident-prone zone due to incomplete work.
The area, known for a sharp bend near Chitaranjan Circle, has seen several accidents where speeding vehicles lose control, either sliding off the road or colliding with the divider. Sadly, a woman lost her life in an accident at this location just last week.
Local residents had previously demanded the construction of an underpass due to the high traffic and pedestrian movement in the area. They even staged protests over concerns about hazardous accidents. In response, senior officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, Member of Parliament, and State Minister, visited the site, inspected it, and promised to build an underpass. During their visit, the residents also requested a halt in the highway expansion work until the underpass is constructed.
However, the contractor company responsible for the road left it incomplete, leaving around 100 meters of the roadwork halted. This negligence on the contractor's part has resulted in numerous accidents in the past year, with no concrete steps taken by the local administration or the police department to address the issue and ensure the safety of lives and property. Local residents are now urging the district administration to exert pressure on the contractor company to expedite the underpass construction, which they believe will help prevent accidents.
Assistant Commissioner Dr. Naina S stated that the ongoing highway expansion work is under regular review by the Deputy Commissioner. She also mentioned that the Deputy Commissioner is planning to visit Bhatkal next week and will conduct a meeting with National Highway Authority officials to discuss the incomplete work of National Highway and the public issue. Dr. Naina assured that the issue of Mood Bhatkal will also be addressed in this meeting.
