Bhatkal: The Karnataka coastline is often likened to a beautiful poem, with its vibrant colors and abundant opportunities. Efforts are underway to transform the coastal beaches into thriving tourism destinations, with hopes of new opportunities emerging with changes in the administrative machinery.
Fishermen who previously relied on the Mavinkurwa port in Bhatkal are now optimistic about the development of Tengangundi and Alvekodi ports. Fishing activities are expanding, providing encouraging employment prospects. While Alvekodi Temple remains popular as a religious site, Tenginagundi and Alvekodi are beckoning tourists. Sightseers from different parts of the taluk are currently exploring Alvekodi and Tenginagundi.

The newly constructed breakwater at Bhatkal's Tengingundi and Alvekodi, costing around Rs. 80 crores, has become an eye-catching attraction. Visitors can now walk along the barrier, similar to Maravante beach in adjacent Kundapur, and enjoy the beauty of the sea. The towering Lord Shiva in Murdeshwar and the picturesque Kunda Island further enhance the scenic views. The sea walk has witnessed an increase in tourist footfall, particularly in the evenings.
However, the development of infrastructure, including the world-famous tourist destination Murdeshwar, remains a challenge along the Karnataka coast. The proposed road development from Mundalli to Honnavar Apsarkonda, envisioned by Karnataka's Fisheries, Ports, and Inland Transport Minister Mankal Vaidya, needs attention. Moreover, the road connecting Alvekodi to Murdeshwar requires urgent repairs as it currently causes traffic issues. The construction of a bridge between Tenginagundi and Alvekodi should also be prioritized.
To augment the Sea Walk experience, it is essential to establish small huts and houses in Bhatkal, attracting tourists from neighboring states such as Goa and Gokarna. Additionally, there is a promising market for hotels and small commercial shops in the area.
As the MLA from Bhatkal, who has been assigned the portfolio of the port this time, port development remains crucial to him. However, it should be noted that the allure of the Sea Walk can be enhanced without requiring substantial financial investment.
